Default Leg strength

What exercises are best for building strength in my legs?

I'm not bothered about size or looks just raw brutal strength gains lol to assist in trail running, i have some beasty ass hills to look forward in the coming months but i have always struggled with my skinny pins as i live in the fucking flattest place in the u.k.

I'm running more trails in training and doing hill work at the gym, also throwing in some balancing excercises.

I have been doing basic stuff at the gym lately and feel a massive difference, such as leg press, calf raises and quad/ham curls etc but to be honest, all the years I've trained I've never trained legs due to always running road and never really needing to, any tips will be welcomed

Dont mean to go against anyone on this but the best thing for big legs is yes you got it right squats. The best things for fell running or any cross country running is yep your right again the answer is fell running and cross country running.
I have never seen a lakeland fell runner spend a lot of time doing squats.

I don't want want big legs i want to help build up the strength in the gym without having the access to hills apart from on a treadmill, my nearest hill run is about 45 mins drive away.

I know it's holding me back as I can run 10-12 miles on a trail (flat as fook) near me easily but when I head out to do a hell run or military run I fucking tan for weeks lol

I'm faaaaar from a lakeland fell runner, I have run the 3 peaks etc but only as a one off, them guys are stripped bare and part mountain goat lol,

Bro's

Go to Training and scroll down to "5 most effective leg training exercises" by Easy

Yeah you got a point, most runners dont have huge massive quads. but for climbing up steep mountain trails you are going to want some mass.
