Prohormones are fairly prevalent in the world of bodybuilding and hold a definite appeal for young bodybuilders in particular. Many teenagers have been drawn into using performance enhancers as a quick way to build muscle mass, put on weight, and increase strength and speed on the playing field.

And the fact is, prohormones work. Taken in the right dosages, they can certainly boost strength and speed and add muscle. And while anabolic steroids are illegal and have a pretty bad reputation, prohormones are perfectly legal.

So why not take them? Well, in another article (whose link is just above) we looked objectively at the benefits. Now we’re going to look at the other side of the coin and discuss why prohormones should be avoided.

It’s important to understand that there is much unethical marketing in the world of prohormones. Loads of products are on the market, yet many are consistently ineffective. Hard-selling advertising makes it very difficult to know which ones really work and which ones are scams.

Some do certainly work, but only in certain body types. Tribulus Terrestris, for example, has proven to be an effective testosterone booster and does burn fat and build muscle mass. While this works impressively for older men, younger men are already producing as much testosterone as possible, making this drug essentially ineffective.

Prohormones are a fairly controversial topic in the world of bodybuilding and sports. These “legal steroids” are performance enhancers, yet they don’t carry the same negative stigma as anabolic steroids.

Opinions on prohormones vary wildly. Some are strongly against any kind of performance enhancers, while others feel that the benefits of prohormones outweigh any disadvantages. In this article, we take an objective look at the benefits provided by prohormones.

A good argument is made for prohormones in that they are often completely natural, and work with the normal metabolic processes of the body. They work by causing hormones to be released that naturally occur in the body – the only difference being the quantity in which the hormones are produced and the means by which hormone production is triggered.

In many cases, prohormones are naturally derived from herbs or plant extracts, or a combination of minerals and vitamins. For example, a combination of zinc and magnesium aids the male body in the production of testosterone, and thus, is commonly added to prohormones.

Prohormones are a much-discussed topic in the world of bodybuilding. These over-the-counter steroid supplements are often called “legal steroids”. But what are they, really? Are they anything like illegal steroids? And ultimately, are they helpful or harmful?

Simply explained, a prohormone is a chemical substance that is a precursor to a hormone. A prohormone will generally have little effect on its own until it combines with enzymes in the body, at which point the prohormone is converted into an anabolic steroid. The main purpose of prohormones is to supplement or enhance the strength of hormones that are naturally in the body.

Prohormones have become increasingly popular specifically because of the similarity to steroids (though the results from prohormones are generally less drastic). The primary difference between prohormones and steroids is that prohormones add no hormones to the body, but rather enhance existing hormones. Steroids, on the other hand, add hormones to the body.

It’s important to understand that though prohormones are relatively weak on their own, there is ultimately little difference between the actual effect of prohormones and traditional (illegal) steroids. Illegal steroids are not necessarily more potent or toxic than their legal counterparts. Methyl-1-Testosterone, for example, was a legal prohormone until 2005 and was considerably more powerful than many illegal alternatives.
